Johnston RI Community Profile & History
Johnston, Rhode Island was originally a part of Providence, and became a separate town after it was incorporated independently in 1759. The town was named in honor of Augustus Lucas Johnston, of Newport, Attorney General of Rhode Island from 1758 to 1766 and the owner of extensive land tracks in the area.
The town's first European settler was Thomas Clemence, who built a house circa 1680. Still standing at 38 George Waterman Road, it is known today as the Clemence-Irons House. A soapstone quarry (first used by local Indians) and a granite quarry were mined by the town's early settlers. A cotton mill was built in 1835, and a dyestuffs factory was established about 1870.
The community experienced major industrial development with the founding of a hosiery company in 1884 which employed over 100 people. By the middle of the 19th century, the town's early farming economy had been replaced by the manufacture of jewelry and silverware, fabricated metals, and retail trade establishments.
While a few colonial farm houses still dot the landscape, the town has enjoyed a great deal of residential development in recent years. Popular recreational sites include the War Memorial Park, which hosts a variety of community events and festivities throughout the year; and Dame Farm, which dates from colonial times and offers pick-your-own apples, wagon rides, and a historical museum. Boasting a rich history and a small-town atmosphere with easy access to the commercial and academic resources of New England's major cities, present-day Johnston is an ideal location for commuters and businesses alike.
